Each child brings a different set of experiences and skills to school upon admission into the Reception Year. We aim to provide a smooth and enjoyable transition from home to school.
At Silverdale, we:
- liaise with parents and preschool settings in order to visit children in their pre-school contexts
- offer all parents of new children a home visit where needs can be discussed confidentially and children are free to show their prospective teacher and teaching assistant anything that is important to them e.g. their favourite toy or their pet.
Teaching and learning in our Reception Classes is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and is highly personalised to meet the individual needs of each child. There is a programme of contact between local Preschool Provision and the school throughout the year so that pre-school children begin to be familiar with staff, routines and the layout of accommodation.
We offer a wide range of learning experiences to enable our children to develop their mathematical and reasoning skills. Maths lessons take place across the academy on a daily basis.
At Silverdale we believe that problem solving is at the very heart of the maths curriculum. We embed problems solving activities into all lessons as well as teaching discrete problem solving lessons once a week.
As an academy we subscribe to Stops problem solving. Follow the link below to try out some puzzles and games on their ‘Family Zone’.
Children should be practising their times tables regularly at home. Year groups will focus on set times tables as detailed below however children should be encouraged to continue revising all known times tables.
Year 2 – 2, 5 and 10 times tables
Year 3 – 3, 4, 6 and 8 times tables
Year 4 – 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables
Year 5 and 6 – All times tables

We offer a wide range of learning experiences to enable our children to develop their skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening. Literacy lessons take place across the school on a daily basis.
Children are encouraged to read regularly from Early Years Foundation Stage upwards to enable them to become confident and fluent readers and develop a lifelong love of reading. Our Reading Champion reads with children daily to ensure that they are reading with an adult as often as possible.
Through our banks of iPads and laptops children have access to a number of apps, including "Reading eggs" and "Spelling shed". Children are given the opportunity to access these in the academy through the week, but are also provided with a login so they can continue to access these at home.
In Year 1 every child will read to an adult daily through our Daily Supported Reader initiative - this make be individually or in the context of a small group.
Phonics skills are taught in the Early Years Foundation Stage and through Key Stage One using a range of Phonics resources and based upon "Letters and Sounds." The work continues into Key Stage 2, with a greater focus on higher level reading, spelling, grammar and writing strategies.
At Silverdale, we are extremely proud of our wonderful "rainforest" library, which offers our children the opportunity to access a wide range of books in an exciting and inspiring environment.
Our children have a variety of opportunities to learn how to write in a range of writing genres as they progress through the school.
We believe that the use of ICT to support the curriculum motivates pupils and facilitates a greater range of learning outcomes. The school has extensive range of new computer hardware and software applications which aid this. Every classroom has access to a bank of laptop computers and iPads. In EYFS with now have a number of Android tablets for the children to access their learning through.
The Academy has a complete managed wireless network system which enables laptops and tablets to be used in any area of the buildings. In addition to this, all classrooms and the library have interactive whiteboards or touchscreens fitted to enhance teaching and learning. The knowledge required to make the best use of Information Technology are developed well beyond National Curriculum requirements and the use of computers is integrated with the teaching of all subjects. We also have a number of other resources including robots that can be programmed by the children and banks of digital cameras.
Through the East Sussex NGN (Next Generation Network) we have secure and private access to the NEN via the SEGfL (South East Grid for Learning). Children are able to research and interact with the Internet, but the school carefully selects sites and open internet access is not available through our secure and monitored system. Pupils are educated in the importance of e-safety.
It is a fact that children learn most effectively when they are motivated and inspired to do so. Our Curriculum is built upon the most up-to-date "Powerful knowledge" there is.
Art and Humanities subjects are chosen to ensure that the children have access to a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum with the National Curriculum at it core. Work is closely matched to individual pupils' abilities. Children's work is valued and celebrated.
First hand experiences, use of the local environment, school trips and the development of key skills for life are essential tools for learning.
We work hard to provide a rich, broad, knowledge-based curriculum. The teaching of each subject is planned to include exciting and stimulating experiences through which children learn whilst having fun, however at its core the development of key knowledge underpins all learning.
At Silverdale, we promote a healthy and active lifestyle for all our pupils; Physical Education plays an important part of this ethos. Pupils participate in Dance, Gymnastics, Outdoor Sports and Team Games. All children do P.E and games on a regular basis as part of their curriculum.
Competitive sport is promoted within the context of a supportive learning environment. P.E lessons take place both in our school halls and outside on the play areas and field. We also have our own indoor heated swimming pool where the children are able to develop their swimming skills.
In addition to this, there are after school clubs and activities including judo, karate, tai-kwan-do, tennis, zumba, netball, running, cricket and football. Children have opportunities to take part in various sports tournaments and compete against children from other schools throughout the year.
